SCOWIS Race

With 83% of precincts reporting, the race for Supreme Court has been decided with liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz becoming Wisconsin’s next Supreme Court Justice.
  • Janet Protasiewicz: 55.5%
  • Daniel Kelly: 44.5%

In response to tonight’s results, the candidates had the following reactions:

Janet Protasiewicz

In a speech to supporters at her election night party flanked by the court’s three other liberal members, Judge Protasiewicz stated that “Today I’m proud to stand by the promise I’ve made to every Wisconsinite that I will always deliver justice and bring common sense to our Supreme Court…Tonight we celebrate this historic victory that has obviously ignited hope in so many of us.”

Daniel Kelly

In his concession speech, former Justice Kelly stated “It brings me no joy to say this, I wish that in a circumstance like this, I would be able to concede to a worthy opponent. But I do not have a worthy opponent to which I can concede. This was the most deeply deceitful, dishonorable, despicable campaign I have ever seen run for the courts. It was truly beneath contempt. Now I say this not because we did not prevail. I do not say this because of the rampant slanders that were launched against me, although that was bad enough. But that is not my concern. My concern is the damage done to the institution of the court. My opponent is a serial liar. She has disregarded judicial ethics. She has demeaned the judiciary with her behavior, and this is the future we have to look forward to here in Wisconsin.”

The results tip the balance of the court to a 4-3 Liberal majority for at least the next two years.
