The Cost of Obesity

Are you aware of the significant health risks and financial burdens associated with health plan members that are overweight or obese? Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of 2019-2020, reports that approximately 42.4% of adults in the United States were classified as obese, highlighting the persistent nature of this public health issue. Obesity is also strongly associated with co-morbid chronic diseases that represent a heavy burden on the healthcare ecosystem.

The economic burden of obesity and its associated health conditions is significant. Obesity contributes to increased healthcare costs, productivity losses, and a higher prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. According to recent estimates from the American Heart Association, the total annual cost of obesity-related healthcare expenses and lost productivity in the United States exceeded $580 billion in 2020 alone, and that financial impact continues to grow year over year. By investing in intervention programs, individuals can not only improve their health outcomes but also alleviate the strain on healthcare systems and the economy.

Intervention programs play a crucial role in addressing the multifaceted impact of obesity. These programs, including digital solutions for weight loss and lifestyle management, equip individuals with practical tools and resources to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Studies consistently demonstrate that interventions combining technology with behavioral support yield tangible benefits, including significant weight loss and improvements in overall health.

Health plans have a vested interest in addressing obesity within their patient populations given the strong link between obesity and a wide number of associated chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease—which all drive healthcare utilization and claims costs. By proactively addressing the issue of weight loss with targeted intervention programs and lifestyle coaching, systems can improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and generate a higher level of patient satisfaction with their health plan.
