First-term Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul is seeking re-election to the state’s top law enforcement job in 2022, but he will face Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney in the general election.
AG Kaul won election in 2018 by narrowly defeating incumbent Republican AG Brad Schimel. Kaul defeated Schimel by just 17,190 votes, garnering 49.4% of the total vote. In his 2018 victory, Kaul raised over $2.4 million in campaign contributions. As of January 1, 2022, Kaul reported having $1.07 million on hand to support his bid for re-election. Prior to being elected in 2018, Kaul served as a federal prosecutor in Baltimore and then transitioned to the private practice firm Perkins Coie where he focused on voting rights and election law.
Eric Toney narrowly won the Republican primary. Toney is serving in his third term as District Attorney for Fond du Lac County. Toney promises to prioritize the safety and security of Wisconsin families by increasing the number of frontline prosecutors, which Toney blames AG Kaul for reducing by 26% over the last four years.
