2024 U.S. Senate Race Background

Two-term U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is running for her third term in 2024.

Senator Baldwin was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 when she defeated former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson. Baldwin defeated Thompson by 166,978 votes. In 2018, Baldwin ran for re-election against former State Senator Leah Vukmir. Baldwin defeated Vukmir by 288,029 votes.

Prior to serving as Wisconsin’s junior U.S. Senator, Baldwin served three terms in the State Assembly and represented the 2nd Congressional District from 1999- 2013. With her election to the U.S. Senate in 2012, Baldwin was the first LGBT woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate and also is the first woman from Wisconsin to be elected to the position. Baldwin will not face an opponent in the August primary.

In the Republican field, banking and real estate entrepreneur Eric Hovde is the front runner. Hovde ran for the U.S. Senate in 2012, where he lost in the primary to Tommy Thompson. Also running is UW- Stevens Point student and College Republicans Chairwoman Rejoin Raveendran and several other candidates. Franklin businessman Scott Mayer and Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke are both considering running for the seat.
