Legislative Races

2024 Legislative Race Background

Following the legislature’s passage of Act 94’s new maps, the Wisconsin State Legislature is likely to again see historic turnover.

21 lawmakers have already announced that they are not returning to their current seats for the 2025-2026 Legislative Session.

Meanwhile, Act 94 pairs 13 state senators in six Senate seats, leaving seven incumbents out of a seat and seven open seats in the Senate. In the Assembly, Act 94 pairs 30 incumbents in 15 Assembly seats, leaving 15 incumbents out of a seat and 15 open seats in the Assembly. This leads to the potential for 44 new lawmakers in addition to those incumbents who have announced they will not seek re-election.

In the state Senate, only even-numbered districts are up for re-election in 2024, odd-numbered districts will not be up for re-election under Act 94 until 2026. For a further analysis of the potential makeup of the legislature, please view our “Control of Legislature Analysis.”
